Alright I just wanted to point out that I am hoping you plan on keeping it realistic with firearms and weaponry. The Majority of firearms you would find in a fallen england would be previously legally owned firearms which have no doubt been collected up along with ammunition and stolen from houses or rifle clubs.
Now heres a small bit of advice for anyone contemplating bringing firearms to your character or into the world.
Within the UK there are certain Firearms Restrictions which must be met to legally own a firearm. First of all it must be kept in a gun safe (Making the weapons hard to find and hard to steal) Ingame and IRL. Secondly there are limits on what you can get.
Fully Automatic Rifles:
Military and Policing Personnel only, kept in a base armoury or police armoury.
Semi Automatic Rifles:
Nothing above the calibre of .22LR a small game hunting rifle calibre which can kill humans (byrd) although isn't designed for that purpose or is particularly suited for it. They do have the advantage though of being able to fire quickly.
Lever Action Rifles:
These are legal from .22LR up to .50 (if it were available) although is more likely to be 30-30 a deer hunting calibre common in america. Not so much in england though, more of a fun range gun than deer stalking in the UK.
Bolt Action:
Everything from .177HMR up to .50 (it is available in places) although most likely to be .22, 5.56mm, .177, 7.62mm or a similar common calibre.
Straight Pull: (Rifles like an M4 or AK that must be cocked each time to fire):
These are normally in either 5.56mm (M4/AR-15) or 5.45mm (AK-74) or 7.62mm (AK-47) these weapons are normally range toys although they have the chance to be some of the best weapons in the game (not included law enforcement weaponry or army)
You also then have Pistols and shotguns to consider;
Pistols: All Pistols in the UK excl Nothern Ireland are Illegal except for LBRs which are Long Barreled Revolvers. They are about 14inches long and have a large piece of metal sticking from the grip meaning that they are within the rifle size limits. These come in the majority of common pistol calibres from .22Short, .22LR, .357, .44, .9mm and are normally owned by rifle clubs/pistol clubs rather than random people.
Shotguns:
Shotguns are the most common firearm in the UK and the easiest to get a hold of. The majority of shotguns within the UK fit into three select categories.
Double Barreled
Semi-Automatic
Pump Action
Double Barreled shotguns are the most reliable and most common. They come as either a O/U (Over and Under) shotgun which means that one barrel is ontop of the other and the weapon is broken in half, two shells inserted and then you can fire both shells reopen it and reload it. There is also S/S which is Side by Side, these are your typical american/hill billy shotguns they feature the two barrels being next to each other. These are the rarer of the double barreled shotguns in the UK (I've actually never seen one being used)
Semi-Automatic shotguns are less reliable than double barreled or pump guns but have the advantage of quick follow up shots. Meaning you can fire off one shot, then another and then another. They also have the ability to hold 3 rounds 2 in the internal magazine and one in the chamber. These are normally the 'Rich Mans' choice and are the second most common style of shotgun in the UK. They sometimes struggle to fire old rounds or less powerful shotgun rounds such as subsonics.
Pump Action shotguns are very reliable and have the advantage of holding 3 rounds similar to the semi-automatic shotgun. The downfall is of course that you must pump the gun before each shot to load the round into the chamber. Pump guns work with most shotgun shells and loads although for no particular reason aren't really used much in the UK. They are normally the choice of police forces and military personnel although they are generally not found in the sport shooting (clay pigeon or hunting) world.
Here is a short list of firearms availability from most common to least common.
O/U Shotgun
S/S Shotgun
Semi-Automatic Shotgun (These can also be found with a variety of magazine sizes from 2+1 up to 10+1 although 2+1 is the norm)
Bolt Action Rifle
Semi Automatic Rifle
Pump Action Shotgun (These can also be found with a variety of magazine sizes from 2+1 up to 10+1 although 2+1 is the norm)
Lever Action Rifle
Long Barreled Revolver
Straight Pull Rifle
Fully Automatic Rifle
I hope this will have helped the game mechanics a little bit and your understanding of firearms in the UK.
Thanks,
Svothe
