In 2013 a solar storm hit the earth, destroying the world's global infrastructure. Communication networks, power plants and the economy were all thrown into turmoil. At first people tried to get by and live normal lives, however the need for electricity and order was too strong to simply ignore. Violence began to break out here and there, and crime escalated over the years, to the point that some areas of the country were impossible to pass through without armed guard.
In 2020 the remains of the military put into action a plan for the majority of cities to close their borders in order to better manage their own resources and control crime, leaving the rest of the country to look after themselves. Towns and villages did their best to manage but most soon fell to the chaos.
People banded into smaller groups in order to survive and as the years went by these groups grew and some even combined. These early factions were the descendants of todays five current faction. Some were killed off, like the Electros who managed to rebuild part of the old power plant in Leeds. Some just found their perfect place and were left alone by the others, like the Merchants who run the Piece Hall and most of the neutral zones. The rest eventually either combined into the Settlers, Raiders or became Freelancers.
Within the city walls of both York and Bradford civil unrest began to occur, the stress of living in a confined area combined with the rationing of food and water was getting to the inhabitants. The worst seemed to happen within the tenth year of both cities voluntary siege. To deal with this both cities took different courses of action: York cracking down and creating the Enforcers, and Bradford opening its borders early and mingling with the outside world. This interaction brought on the creation of the gangs that would eventually become the Syndicate.
Eventually though, even York now under total Enforcer control had to break its own quarantine and join the rest of the world... it is here, fifty years after the fall that After England begins. And the Enforcers are coming out shooting.
